Discussion:
CS4 exporting to IDML, where's the ZIP?

I want to explore CS4's new InDesign Markup Language export and it's XML, but I do not see the ZIP file that is supposed to be created when I export my file. All I see is an IDML file that my XML editor does not like.
The documentation is weak. There is one link to an Adobe blog that calls it the best new feature in CS4, but I don't think it's working right. Is there anyone exporting to IDML and doing something with it?

The IDML file is a zip file. Rename its extension to .zip and you can unpack it with your favourite unzipper.

Fantastic! If that information was in the documentation, great, but I missed it. If it's not, then it needs to be. InDesign opens up the IDML file fine, and now that I unzipped it, I see all the XML I was looking for.

I thought about adding this to the documentation, but I decided against it because I don't want to overwhelm or confuse novice users. I added a comment to the relevant topic. You may want to check out the IDML readme file. It has links to other good resources:

Hi Bob,

I think using the Java tools are a bit beyond the average middle of the
road user as well. I think scripts like I put up here:
http://www.adobeforums.com/webx?14@@.59b71715/4 are much simpler to use.
It would have been really nice to have IDML packaging and unpackaging
scripts included with the sample scripts...
